Conducting a search of the Canada Revenue Agency’s Charities Directorate website can be a useful tool for non-profits seeking to expand their lists of potential funders and offers a wealth of information on Canadian grant-making foundations and on charities as a whole.

  1. Go to the CRA “Charities” section at:  http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/tx/chrts/menu-eng.html

  2. Click on:  Search our online list

This will take you to a new page where you can search the charities database for a specific charity by any of the following categories:
  • Charity Listing (Canadian Registered Charities, Newly Registered Charities, Recently Revoked Charities, Recent Annulments)
  • Charity Name
  • City
  • Province
  • Postal Code
  • Designation (Public Foundation, Private Foundation, Charitable Organization)
  • Category Code (Category codes are assigned by the CRA Charities Directorate and are used for internal statistical purposes only.  These internally generated codes attempt to classify charities according to their main or stated purposes and also to gather statistics on similar types of organizations.)
  • B/N Registration Number
Once you have entered your search parameters and have selected a charity to review in depth, you can view the charities assets, the amount the charity donated to other charities in a given fiscal year, and a listing of the organizations the charity has made donations to.

  1. From the “Canadian Registered Charities - Detail Page” which lists basic information about the charity, click on the link at the bottom of the page that reads:  Registered Charity Information Return

  2. You will be taken to a new page with links to Registered Charity Information Returns.  Unless the charity you have selected is new, you will see links to several years’ worth of returns.  Select the most recent year.

  3. Click on the link for Section C. Programs and General Information
Section C11 lists whether or not the charity has made gifts to other charities (i.e. qualified donees).
If it has, you will have the option to click on the link Gifts to Qualified Donees which will allow you to view what organizations the charity has supported.

Now that you have established whether or not the charity in question provides funding to other organizations and if their giving history indicates an interest in your area, you can review the charity’s financial information to assess their potential level of giving. Return to the Registered Charity Information Return page.

  1. Click on the link for Section E. Financial Information
E2 provides details on the charity’s financial assets.

  1. Scroll down to section E3, line 5050 which lists the total amount of charitable donations made by the organization during that fiscal year. In assessing the charity’s potential as a donor for your organization, it may also be useful to know who is on their board of directors.

  2. To find out who is on the charity’s board, go to section B.  Section B1 lists whether or not the charity has provided a list of their board of directors.  If they have, you can click on the link Directors/Trustees and Like Officials to view the listing.
